What rules have you broken for patients?:"I had a patient who I knew was going to die. She had a cat that she adored and had found 15 years earlier when he was just a tiny little kitten. I told her husband to go get the cat and we surprised her with it one night. It was nice to see her face light up as she held the cat for about 20 minutes. We also brought a dog in when it wasn't against the rules. The dog left happy and the man died later that night peacefully." http://www.nursingdiscussions.com/broken
What sets your recruiter or company apart?:"I spent a great deal of time picking out a company to work with. So far my choice seems to be a good one. My recruiter has gone out of his way to make sure my needs are met. I was wondering what criteria different people use in selecting a company. For me it is a recruiter I can work with." http://nursingdiscussions.com/apart/

What should I expect???:"Nurses, what can I look forward to or look out for when (not if)I pass the NCLEX with flying colors and graduate?
What aspect of nursing was the most difficult for you to become adjusted to?
What are you still having problems with?
Is there anything that you would recommend to nursing students to help them with the transition from clinicals to actual employment?" http://www.nursingdiscussions.com/expect
What to think about nurses who make up accucheck, Nursingdiscussions.com:"I know of 2 nurses in the facility where I work who change the accucheck numbers to lower numbers just so they wont have to call the doc. We have several residents who if their blood sugar is above 200 the doc has to be called. These nurses hate to talk to our medical director. This is falsifying medical records if I am not mistaken. The DON looks over it. Have any of you ever experienced such a thing in your line of nursing? Its very important that our residents are being monitored closely. I dont think its funny or amusing. These nurses tell me I am being too serious and shouldnt be so picky. I am sorry, but I didnt become a RN to make up things about our residents and not report it to the doc. Any one else with the same problem? or any suggestions?" http://www.nursingdiscussions.com/think
Which nursing career path to choose:"I am a bsn senior nursing student who is trying to decide which nursing path to choose. I have completed all but pedi and preceptorship clinicals.I have enjoyed all clinicals..but med-surg not as much.
Basically.. I would like to ask for your help. Who really enjoys the nursing career they have? The hours, pay, ability to advance their career, etc. I know each situation is different, I just need somewhere to start. We have a career fair in February and most students get their jobs at that time and before graduation." http://www.nursingdiscussions.com/path
"Will & Grace" bombshell, Nursingadvocacy.org:"In its November 13 episode, NBC's popular sitcom "Will & Grace" began a wacky but worrisome foray into the world of "student nursing." Though no one takes what the show does at face value, this episode's treatment of nursing was misleading and damaging to the profession." http://www.nursingadvocacy.org

Gossip (Curtailing Workplace):"I'm just plain sick and tired of the workplace gossip that I hear on an almost nightly basis. Not only is it just plain ignorant, but it can also be very hurtful. I have seen people who appear to be good friends, talk about each other behind their backs...so cruel and unprofessional." http://www.nursingdiscussions.com/gossip
Who ever thought it would happen to us? Assignment From Hell:"I am a seasoned traveler and I thought I knew all the questions to ask a new company. I have never had a problem with assignments/contracts/or accommodations.. - that were not resolved by the company I was with.- I have had several excellent assignments with PRN. When I changed companies I never thought I would have to read all the fine lines of the contract..but my most recent contract seems to be all for the company." http://www.nursingdiscussions.com/assignment
How many of us out there are over 35?:"How many of us out there are over 35? I myself am. I turn 39 on 7-12 and start the ADN program in the fall of this year. I also recevied my GED in January of 02. Call it determination to accomplish my dream. I plan to go to school while working full time and caring for my family, ( a partially disabled husband and two teenage sons). Hows that for determination." http://www.nursingdiscussions.com/35
Law Bans Nurses' (Mandatory) Overtime, Nursingdiscussions.com:"After a five-year battle, New Jersey has a state law barring hospitals and nursing homes from forcing health care employees to work overtime except in emergencies.
Who does the law affect? The law covers all New Jersey hourly workers who provide patient care or clinical services, including nurses, nurses' aides, pharmacists, therapists, technicians who do tests and similar workers, but not doctors, who work at hospitals, nursing homes and in home health care.
Nurses and union officials said the law, only the second in the nation, should improve patient safety and prevent mistakes that people who have been on the job for up to 16 hours can commit." Nursingdiscussions.com/
Nurses Are Ready To Work, But Want Fair Staffing, Nursingadvocacy.org:"For too long, nurses have been victims of a nursing enculturation process in which we are taught to be silent about what we do, to downplay its impact, to negate its importance.
The fact is, nurses have technical expertise and clinical judgments that save lives, on every shift of every day at every hospital--and sometimes even before the patient gets to the hospital." http://www.nursingadvocacy.org
The Flu this year...., Nursingdiscussions.com:"Hearing so much in the media about how severe the flu strain is this year and it seems to be just hitting my state- 5 deaths so far in the last week.
I'm just wondering how it's affecting the patient load where you work? Getting lots of cases? Did you get a flu shot? This could be as bad or worse than SARS hitting Toronto. We really can't afford for the staff to get sick.
Did your hospital provide flu shots for you this year??" http://www.nursingdiscussions.com/
Workplace Bullying:"Have any of you been bullied by a superior? What happened and how did you handle it? I think that this may go on more than folks even recognize. Ex. To make vague threats of staff losing jobs is bullying. To accuse staff of doing something they did not do is bullying. " http://www.nursingdiscussions.com/bullying
Working to improove:"I am an L.P.N. with 10 years experience. I have done it all...surgery, doctors office, Tx. nurse in nursing homes, infection control, and now consulting. This is a new challenge all its own and I fear that I need more and new resources.
I consult for a specialty bed and oxygen provider. We do D.M.E. and also have a closed door Rx. I have been with this company for the last 2 years and have a pretty solid position, however.... I now want to take this to the next level. I know getting my R.N. is the next obvious jump but I don't know that I have the time to focus on that step yet." http://www.nursingdiscussions.com/improove
Working while RN student:"I'm a 32 year old male currently working as a Community Support Worker and will be starting RN school in August. I really enjoy my current job but will need to work while I'm going to school. At the most, I could work Fridays - Monday but am wondering what other peoples experiences have been with working while going to school and what people have found is the most they can work and still stay sane and top of their studies. I prevously completed Mechanical Engineering years ago and did work a couple days a week for one semester but I was much younger then and not as focused. Any advice is great." http://www.ultimatenurse.com/forum/f5/working-while-rn-student-2903/

Workplace Violence, Nursingdiscussions.com:"In a unit I work in, a Doctor had attacked a male nurse.
The doctor had arrived to the unit angry and "running his mouth" how nobody knows what they are doing. When actuary a family dr. sent a patient by car to the hospital with chest pain. The patient was having a MI. The doctor in this case is a cardiologist who was consulted. Any ways, a nurse walked up to the dr and said, " I guess this ones going to the cath lab. All at once the dr jumped from the chair, grabbed the nurse by the throat choking him. This action was in front of the patient and many visitors." http://www.nursingdiscussions.com/violence/
Would You Recommend The Nursing Profession?:"I'm having a hard time recommending Nursing right now. For a young woman of college age, there are too many other fields they can go into that have higher pay, more respect, better working conditions and less stress. Can't see myself recommending a job that will leave them close to tears at the end of each day. I know what things are like on the floors by personal experience and listening to my wife (an ICU nurse) vent each day. We have a daughter who will grow up with both her parent Registered Nurses in active practice. Will we encourage her to go into Nursing?" http://www.nursingdiscussions.com/would
