New Age Anorexia, Self Abusive Behaviors, Self-Mutilation, Scarification, Cutting:"Adolescents and young men and women frequently cut on themselves to relieve the inward pain and mental anguish that they feel they can only express that way. It's a form of anger turned inward, kind of like depression and also a kind of self-hatred or guilt. Many times the most INNOCENT looking kids do this. Quite a few borderline personalities do this. They say that cutting at least makes them "feel something"..it' called self-mutilation. A person feels so frustrated, like he/she has no control over anything but their own body so they cut on it and the pain gives them a release."

Schools of Nursing:

"Scrubs" defines nursing, Nursingadvocacy.org:""Scrubs" defines nursing: it's all about shutting up and following physician "orders. " November 20, 2003 -- Tonight's episode of NBC's "Scrubs," which purports to teach nurse Carla Espinosa that nursing is all about doing what physicians tell you, is one of the most virulently anti-nurse prime time television episodes the Center has ever seen. more..."

Should My Son Go Into Nursing, Nursingdiscussions.com:"My son will be starting college next year. He wants an active hands-on job with good pay (rather than a desk job). When we got to looking at jobs, he liked ones that were in the medical field, and nursing looked good to him. He is bright, and thinks he would enjoy nursing. But reading some of the posts on this forum frightens me enough to wonder if I should ask him to reconsider. He is a mentally strong young man and people usually like him. What do you think?"

Skills (Assessment)

Can't take blood pressure, Ultimatenurse.com:"I am trying to help my wife out. She is in her senior year of her nursing program. She has never been able to take blood pressures accurately. The way she describes her problem is that she hears her own pulse in the stethoscope instead of the patients. She doesn't seem to be getting any help from her instructors, in fact the current instructor is "God's infallible gift to nursing" so therefore can not imagine anyone else having problem that is legitimate. Has anyone heard of someone else having a similar problem? How did they work around it? My wife's instructor says she aware of some nurses paying other nurses to take BP's for them because for one reason or another they are unable to. Thanks in advance for your help."

Staffing Shortages

State Board of Nursing, Disciplinary Actions:

State Rankings for RN Salaries, Ultimatenurse.com:"I found this very interesting. It ranks states by average RN salary and then it adjusts the rankings by using the cost of living in that state. Texas seems to be the best state for RN salaries when cost of living is figured in while Hawaii is last. Maine and New Hampshire have been left out because they couldn't get reliable statistics."

Stay or Go??? Nursingdiscussions.com:"I've been a nurse for 13 years, last 7.5 in the ER. I've never been written up in the 13 years I've been a nurse...until now. Unhappy patient receives different dx from another hospital - writes letter and finds fault with EVERYTHING we did for him. Pt. had 3 BM's, I documented each, Pt. stated that, after his 3rd BM "my nurse said she didn't look at the other two, why should she look at this one!" I did document all three in the PN. So, that part I'm o'kay on. He and family state that "the nurses made comments about the smell" R/T his BM's - I have absolutely no recollection of this occurring. Apparently, neither do my co-workers. I was written up anyway for behaving "unprofessionally" with the patient."

3 Year waiting period, is there other options?:"Over the last few days I checked around with friends that are doing and enjoying nursing, male and female. First and foremost, is that common to have a 3 year wait?:

Male nurses needed, Nursingdiscussions.com:"Hello, I'm a nursing student and I have to write a paper on something that I want to know. I wanted to know why there are so few male nurses. If possible, can people reply to these few questions. thank you very much. 1. How long have you been a nurse? 2. When did you start your nursing studes? 3. Where you ever ridiculed for being a nurse and how? 4. Are you happy with your career choice and what other careers have you tried? 5. What are the advantages and disadvantages to being a male nurse? 6. How do male and female patients act differently around you?"

Substance Abuse:

Accused of Doing Drugs, Would like advice from someone that been there (Accused of Drug Use, State Board Inquiry):"I am feeling very stressed and glad I found this site, I have only been in nursing for four years and I truly enjoy what I do, and have done well. Recently I received a letter from the nursing board in my state and they said they received a letter from someone stating that I do drugs and come to work stoned."

Drug Use As A Nursing Student:"Hi all. I am a male nursing student in my 2nd semester of school. I have 3 more after this and will take the boards next fall. I'm really excited about all of the possibilities and most of all (not to sound too cliche)about the opportunities to change lives that I'll have. I do have a question for current RN's. I occasionally smoke small amounts of marijuana. I don't have remorse or shame because I know it's a personal choice that I let affect noone around me. I only do it alone or with very close friends. I don't sell it or try to get anyone else to try it." http://www.nursingdiscussions.com/drug

Impaired Nurses, Nursingdiscussions.com:"Hello to all. I am new to this site and I'm so glad to find it. I haven't found a topic though that plagues alot of nurses;which is substance abuse. I became addicted to pain medication while working on an orthopedic floor in 1998 and began diverting pain medication from the hospital. Eventually, (thank God) I was intervened upon and suspended from work pending a psych eval. I went to treatment for a total of 7 months. Now, I am in a state monitoring program that watches me very closely. I am just now getting back into the work force, and it is so hard to tell these potiential employers about my past, even a little embarrassing. I was just wanting some feedback from some others out there? Their experiences? Stories?

Working while RN student:"I'm a 32 year old male currently working as a Community Support Worker and will be starting RN school in August. I really enjoy my current job but will need to work while I'm going to school. At the most, I could work Fridays - Monday but am wondering what other peoples experiences have been with working while going to school and what people have found is the most they can work and still stay sane and top of their studies. I prevously completed Mechanical Engineering years ago and did work a couple days a week for one semester but I was much younger then and not as focused. Any advice is great."

Survey (Joint Commissions Mock), Nursingdiscussions.com:"Guess what we had today. A Mock Joint Survey. So we paid someone to come tell us what we did wrong. And guess who got picked to go sit and talk to the Surveier and DON, nurse manager and nursing ed people....you're right ME. I wasn't like it wasn't me with 15 patients a couple of students and a RN pulled from another unit for the first time."
