Can't take blood pressure, Ultimatenurse.com:"I am trying to help my wife out. She is in her senior year of her nursing program. She has never been able to take blood pressures accurately. The way she describes her problem is that she hears her own pulse in the stethoscope instead of the patients. She doesn't seem to be getting any help from her instructors, in fact the current instructor is "God's infallible gift to nursing" so therefore can not imagine anyone else having problem that is legitimate. Has anyone heard of someone else having a similar problem? How did they work around it? My wife's instructor says she aware of some nurses paying other nurses to take BP's for them because for one reason or another they are unable to. Thanks in advance for your help."

Certified Nursing Assistants:

Are good CNA jobs that hard to find???, Nursingdiscussions.com:"I am a 27 year old male trying to get into RN school. To try to get an extra point. I have a few months till the spring semester starts(knock on wood I get in) so I though I would go ahead and get a CNA job at one of the local hospitals(Oklahoma City) to get some experience, start my benefits(Insurance, etc.), and make some extra cash."

Nurses Aides, Can't Live With Them. . ., Nursingdiscussions.com:"During my clinicals, we were at a local unionized nursing home. I remember one day I was supposed to be shown how to give a swedish bath. The two CNAs that I was with put an incontinence pad on the tub, put the female resident on the tub and accompanied me to the shower room. AFter telling me where everything was, they left. Oh, I forgot to mention that this poor old sweet woman has contractures. THey merely left after saying "If you need help, pull the string." I had told them TWICE that I had never done this before. After three attempts, I decided the call light was not going to get their attention."

Chemical Dependency, Substance Abuse, Addictions

Accused of Doing Drugs, Would like advice from someone that been there (Accused of Drug Use, State Board Inquiry):"I am feeling very stressed and glad I found this site, I have only been in nursing for four years and I truly enjoy what I do, and have done well. Recently I received a letter from the nursing board in my state and they said they received a letter from someone stating that I do drugs and come to work stoned."

Impaired Nurses, Nursingdiscussions.com:"Hello to all. I am new to this site and I'm so glad to find it. I haven't found a topic though that plagues alot of nurses;which is substance abuse. I became addicted to pain medication while working on an orthopedic floor in 1998 and began diverting pain medication from the hospital. Eventually, (thank God) I was intervened upon and suspended from work pending a psych eval. I went to treatment for a total of 7 months. Now, I am in a state monitoring program that watches me very closely. I am just now getting back into the work force, and it is so hard to tell these potiential employers about my past, even a little embarrassing. I was just wanting some feedback from some others out there? Their experiences? Stories?

Circumcision (Infant), Nursingdiscussions.com:"I hope this topic isn't too out of line for this forum. It tends to be an emotional one - at least when pregnant women discuss it. Coffee (Caffeine)

First thing in the morning, Nursingdiscussions.com:"Our unit secretaries are the best. One of them even keeps the coffee fresh by making a new pot every 45 minutes or so. Eat your hearts out. The only exception I have is that at 06:45AM, I cannot deal with hazelnut cappuccino flavored coffee. I need hot, black, american coffee. How do you guys feel. Can you do foo-foo coffee first thing in the morning?"

Complaints (Patient):

Stay or Go??? Nursingdiscussions.com:"I've been a nurse for 13 years, last 7.5 in the ER. I've never been written up in the 13 years I've been a nurse...until now. Unhappy patient receives different dx from another hospital - writes letter and finds fault with EVERYTHING we did for him. Pt. had 3 BM's, I documented each, Pt. stated that, after his 3rd BM "my nurse said she didn't look at the other two, why should she look at this one!" I did document all three in the PN. So, that part I'm o'kay on. He and family state that "the nurses made comments about the smell" R/T his BM's - I have absolutely no recollection of this occurring. Apparently, neither do my co-workers. I was written up anyway for behaving "unprofessionally" with the patient."

Confrontation:

Dealing With Confrontation In Nursing, Nursingdiscussions.com:"It seems that there is more being said about violence in the workplace in regards to nursing. This is a somewhat understandable trend considering the increasing stresses facing nurses and the health care system with shortages, budget cuts, staff cuts, and yet a continuously expanding role and expectations. This violence is present at several different levels; nurse to nurse, patient to nurse, nurse to nursing student, and other health care professionals to nurse. With increased awareness comes increased ability to deal with it through appropriate channels. I have faced a few situations as a student in the clinical setting that have lived up to the saying "nurses eat their young". But does the awareness and resources make a difference? What options are available to assist in making a workplace more tolerable? Any horror stories and how you dealt with them?"

Connecticut: Nursing shortage being tackled at high school level:"High schools in the state are now trying to fill the growing void of vacant positions. In about 15 years, millions of seniors will be on medicare. The federal government expects Connecticut will be almost 22,000 nurses short to meet future medical needs. The push is on for young people to enter health care professions."

Constant Care (Nursing Assistant Chronicles), Code Blog.com:"It had been my first shift back in a near three month sabbatical from the hospital. Work was few and far between in those days, mainly because my seniority was so low. This also meant I got the short end of the stick when it came to shifts, wards and patient care. One of our duties as Nursing Assistant is Constant Care, where we sit (or stand, or run or walk) with a patient and watch everything they do, help them with everything and basically provide direct one on one care."

Cranky Chick: EMS Archives:"I once worked a night shift with a paramedic who, when referencing the mapbook to navigate our ambulance to an emergency, began striking himself in the head with the book when he became overcome with the stress of having to tell me how to get to our call. These are heavy, THICK notebooks with pages and pages of maps representing every corner of the county inside. Over and over, he kept striking himself in the forehead with the book, chastising himself with, "Think, damnit! Think!"

Cry (Your Best), Nursingdiscussions.com:"This may sound strange, but my favorite cry was after an adult code. I only had less than a 1year in er. We had two codes in the ER going at one time. I was running one of them and the doctor was in another room. Well the dr gave me that code to run because he was just about DOA. I finally got the doc in there to pronounce, then he asked me to talk to the family."

Curtailing Workplace Gossip:"I'm just plain sick and tired of the workplace gossip that I hear on an almost nightly basis. Not only is it just plain ignorant, but it can also be very hurtful. I have seen people who appear to be good friends, talk about each other behind their backs...so cruel and unprofessional."
